Even though we used a xi touring wagon to perform this repair, this article can be applied to any 5 series vehicle with minor modifications to the repair steps.
A BMW E60 fuel pump replacement is an easy repair for the savvy home mechanic that can help cure hard engine starts. A popular misconception among BMW enthusiasts is that the fuel delivery system in 5 series vehicles is a single component.
Technically the fuel system in the BMW E60 sedan and E61 touring wagon consists of two units that work in tandem to transport gasoline from the fuel storage tank to the engine. Although there is no definitive time span as to how long a BMW E60 fuel pump system will last, the BMW Repair Guide has noticed a high failure rate at around , miles. The most frequent symptom of a failing BMW E60 fuel pump is a "hard start" Other symptoms of a failing fuel delivery system are a complete no start, poor acceleration, stalling, or rough idling engine.
The question still remains as to which part of the fuel delivery system should be replaced if it is diagnosed as the source of any of the above symptoms. The answer is Once you are happy, re-fit the undertray and let the car down and reward yourself with a bear edit: or better stil, a "beer"! AAAnnnnd, theres always one!!! For the life of me I couldn't figure out where in the undertray this one came out from but the tray is secure enough. Out of interest I opened up the old filter to see what 3 years maybe more depending on what the previous owners used!
One nice thing about working on a diesel 5 series is that the diesel is self lubricating allowing pipes to simply slide off, and the annoying! Nice this helpful think i might do mine soon. Nice write up Tej!! Kadir, take note for Sunday. Did you use a genuine filter can I ask? If so how much did it cost?
Just about do mine next month is all so I'm just making up a shopping list with prices. But they usually make the oem stuff anyway. The jubilee clip on your filter was probably fitted by someone who has changed the filter previously as the bmw clip is not re-usable. So anyone doing this job needs to get a new jubilee clip before hand. Check out the first couple of pics of the clip, it's the original jubilee clip. You'll see that we filed a groove into it on the last pic to allow me to reuse it.
Think Al do mine this weekend been putting it off to long. Great write up. Well possibly bmw used different types but this was fitted to my car if you can just make out the clip on there. Then once removed I replaced with your type of clip Your not wrong but just incase someone has the other type and gets stuck half way through the job in hand. Mine could have been changed at some point then I guess.
Not sure an indi would use such a clip, so maybe it was done by a main dealer. You make a good point though, if someone is looking to do the job themself, they might be better off buying a new clip just in case.
TEJ, your photos don't work.
