It can be about "one man's trash is another man's pleasure", or just that you don't need to wear a flashy outfit when you can buy a cheap one for 20 dollars at a thrift shop. Login Register Login with Facebook. All lyrics are property and copyright of their owners.

Edit Lyrics. Lyrics powered by LyricFind. Thrift Shop song meanings. Add Your Thoughts 27 Comments. My Interpretation I think the song is about the current state of today's youth and society. Everyone cares about who has what and how much did it cost. Even thrift stores can be cool you know? No Replies Log in to reply. There was an error. My Interpretation The meaning of this song is fairly straightforward to me.
It is first a wakeup call to the fact that people blow an unbelievable amount of money on clothes to give themselves a distinctive "style" so that they may impress others and to boost our own confidence. Because fashion trends are so subjective and always changing, people will always be tricked into giving up their money. But what people are really starving for the most is self-differentiation and coming up with an entirely new style to set themselves apart from the masses.
Macklemore suggests that you might be able to do just that by being creative at the thrift shop. This song essentially flips the bird at the concept that one has to spend a lot of money to put together an interesting style. In a dark twist, Macklemore's not as far outside the system as he thinks he is; just like the Gucci crowd, he's relying on material possessions to send out an image of himself.
But as much as Macklemore would set himself apart, there are still times on "Thrift Shop" when his lyrics seem all too similar to the "ignorant" masses he's criticizing. Sometimes it's harmless machismo. Other times, as with the R.
Kelly piss joke, it's lazy dudebro humor. But elsewhere, when Macklemore's not listing funny clothes he wants to buy, there's some brief ugliness. Just because they're spending their money on something Macklemore wouldn't? This isn't a huge deal, and we're not calling Macklemore a misogynist or anything, but it's weird that a rapper who observed "gay is synonymous with the lesser," wouldn't notice how often femininity is, too.
Or, more likely, he did notice and didn't think this was a big deal. After all, it's just a party song. The rest of the album, that's the place for political lectures.
What autonomy should artists and beloved cultural figures have over their legacy after they pass? On Moon Boy , Yung Bleu's debut album, the crooner attempts to balance his dueling personas and ultimately presents a radio-ready project ripe with agenda. Up Next.
